Mayor Unveils Plan to Make Columbia Streets Safer

COLUMBIA BOROUGH – Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz is moving forward with a series of traffic and pedestrian safety improvements aimed at making borough streets safer for residents, students, and visitors.

The mayor is scheduled to present details of his “Safe Streets” initiative during Borough Council’s October 13 meeting. While the presentation is still being finalized, comments made during recent council meetings reveal a plan focused on improving pedestrian visibility, upgrading crossing signals, and enhancing street lighting throughout town.

According to previous meeting discussions, Mayor Lutz has been exploring the use of highly visible “piano key” style crosswalks, evaluating upgrades to pedestrian crossing signals, and seeking opportunities to improve lighting in areas where safety concerns have been raised. He has worked with LTAP engineers and met with officials in Lancaster City to gather ideas and best practices.

The initiative comes as residents continue raising concerns about speeding vehicles, drivers failing to yield to pedestrians, and safety issues involving bicycles and motorized scooters.

Several residents spoke during recent council meetings, urging officials to increase traffic enforcement and create safer conditions for pedestrians using borough streets and crosswalks.

Mayor Lutz has also indicated that he is pursuing grant opportunities that could help fund improvements without placing the entire cost on local taxpayers.

As Columbia continues to grow and attract visitors through redevelopment projects and community events, borough leaders say pedestrian safety will remain a priority.

The upcoming presentation could provide residents with their first detailed look at what improvements may be coming and where they could be installed.
