Walnut Street Officially Set to Become a One-Way Street

COLUMBIA BOROUGH – One of Columbia’s busiest downtown corridors may soon see a significant traffic change as Borough Council considers an ordinance that would officially designate portions of Walnut Street as a one-way roadway.

Under the proposal, the 100 and 200 blocks of Walnut Street would become westbound-only traffic. The change is tied to the ongoing streetscape improvements that have transformed portions of the downtown area over the past several months.

Officials say the redesign is intended to improve traffic flow, create safer conditions for pedestrians, and better accommodate the updated street layout. The project has included sidewalk enhancements, new streetscape features, and roadway modifications designed to support both local businesses and visitors.

For residents who regularly travel through downtown, the change could take some adjustment. Drivers accustomed to using Walnut Street in both directions will need to familiarize themselves with the new traffic pattern once implemented.

Supporters of the change argue that one-way streets often reduce vehicle conflicts, improve visibility at intersections, and create additional opportunities for pedestrian safety improvements. They also point out that Columbia’s downtown continues to evolve as new businesses, housing projects, and redevelopment efforts bring additional activity into the borough.

Not everyone welcomes major traffic changes, however. Whenever long-standing driving patterns are altered, questions typically arise about congestion, parking access, and navigation for visitors unfamiliar with the area.

Council members are expected to review the ordinance during their meeting before making a final decision.

If approved, signage and traffic control measures would be installed to guide motorists through the new configuration.
