COLUMBIA, Pa. — A Columbia native and former U.S. Marine has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison following a child exploitation investigation that federal authorities described as one of the most disturbing cases they have encountered.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Alexander Douglas Kuhn, 35, received the sentence after being convicted on federal child pornography and child exploitation charges stemming from a multi-agency investigation that began in 2023.
Federal prosecutors said Homeland Security Investigations and local law enforcement identified Kuhn through online activity and subsequently launched an investigation that led to a federal search warrant and his arrest in New Bern, North Carolina. Authorities reported discovering extensive evidence on electronic devices seized during the investigation.
In announcing the sentence, federal officials emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and the importance of protecting children from online predators. Homeland Security Investigations credited cooperation among multiple agencies, including HSI, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials stated that the investigation uncovered evidence of child sexual abuse material as well as the production and distribution of illicit images. Court records cited by federal authorities indicate the offenses involved the exploitation of a young child over an extended period.
The 40-year sentence effectively ensures Kuhn will spend a significant portion of his remaining life in federal custody. Federal authorities said the case reflects ongoing efforts to identify and prosecute individuals who use online platforms to exploit children.
While Kuhn has long been associated with Columbia through family and local ties, the crimes occurred in North Carolina and were prosecuted in federal court there. No information released by federal authorities indicates any connection between the criminal conduct and Columbia Borough itself.
Cases involving child exploitation frequently originate from tips, undercover investigations, reports from technology companies, and cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies. Law enforcement officials continue to encourage parents and guardians to monitor children’s online activities and report suspicious behavior.
