COLUMBIA, PA – Columbia officials outlined a series of pedestrian safety improvements Monday night as borough leaders continue efforts to make local streets safer for residents and school children.
The initiative comes as community members continue to discuss traffic safety following August’s tragic pedestrian crash that claimed two lives and seriously injured a child.
Mayor Leo Lutz announced several action items currently under review, including enhanced “piano key” crosswalk markings designed to improve visibility during both daytime and nighttime conditions. Officials are also exploring additional pedestrian crossing signals and traffic light upgrades that would briefly stop all vehicle traffic while pedestrians cross major intersections.
The borough plans to focus first on routes commonly used by students traveling to and from school. Officials said recent reviews revealed that some student travel patterns have changed over the years, requiring updates to previously identified safe routes.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Columbia is working with transportation engineers, county planners, and state agencies to identify problem areas and determine the most effective safety solutions.
Several residents urged officials to pair physical improvements with increased enforcement of traffic laws, particularly at crosswalks and school crossings.
Borough leaders acknowledged that major improvements will require planning, permits, and funding, but emphasized that pedestrian safety remains a top priority moving forward.
