COLUMBIA, Pa. — Strong thunderstorms swept through the Columbia area Friday afternoon, bringing torrential rainfall, damaging wind potential, and localized flooding that prompted multiple weather warnings across Lancaster County.
The strongest storms moved through the region during the afternoon hours, darkening skies and unleashing heavy downpours that quickly led to hazardous conditions on area roads. Weather officials warned of wind gusts capable of damaging trees, roofs, and siding as the storms tracked across Lancaster and neighboring York County.
As the storms intensified, rainfall accumulated rapidly, overwhelming drainage systems in some areas. Low-lying roads and flood-prone locations experienced rising water, leading authorities to issue flood-related warnings that included Columbia and several surrounding communities.
Reports later in the day indicated ongoing flooding as some locations received several inches of rain in a relatively short period of time. Residents were urged to avoid flooded roadways and use caution while traveling, particularly during the evening commute.
While Friday’s weather created significant disruptions, conditions are expected to improve as the weekend begins.
Saturday will bring another hot and humid summer day, with temperatures expected to climb near 90 degrees. Sunshine is expected for much of the day, although scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms could once again develop across the region. Anyone planning outdoor activities should remain alert for changing weather conditions later in the day.
