As communities across Lancaster County continue to navigate challenges and celebrate successes, State Rep. Brett Miller is focusing on initiatives aimed at strengthening public safety, supporting local organizations, and connecting residents with valuable services.
In his latest legislative update, Miller highlighted several efforts designed to improve quality of life for residents throughout the region while recognizing local groups that continue to make a difference in Columbia and surrounding communities.
One of the major events Miller is encouraging residents to participate in is National Night Out, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4. The annual event promotes positive relationships between police departments and the communities they serve. Local events in East Hempfield, West Hempfield, and Manor Township will bring together residents, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency personnel, and community organizations for an evening of activities, education, and family fun.
Miller emphasized the importance of these gatherings as opportunities for neighbors to connect with first responders and strengthen the partnerships that help keep communities safe.
Beyond public safety, Miller also pointed to several new state initiatives that could directly benefit Pennsylvania residents.
Among them is a recently enacted law designed to curb unwanted telemarketing calls. The legislation prohibits companies from using deceptive caller ID tactics, commonly known as spoofing, and places new restrictions on when sales calls may be made. The law also requires clearer disclosures and stronger consumer protections.
Mental health services also received significant attention in the newly approved state budget. Funding was included to expand access to crisis intervention resources and support Pennsylvania’s 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline network. Additional funding will help maintain crisis walk-in centers that provide assistance to individuals experiencing behavioral or mental health emergencies.
Miller is also encouraging residents to check whether they may be owed unclaimed property through the Pennsylvania Treasury. According to state officials, one in ten Pennsylvanians has unclaimed funds, with many claims exceeding $1,000. His office continues to assist residents in searching for and recovering money that may belong to them or their family members.
Veterans and military families were another focus of Miller’s update. Eligible veterans facing financial hardships may qualify for assistance through Pennsylvania’s Veterans Temporary Assistance Program, which helps cover essential living expenses such as housing, food, clothing, and utilities.
Closer to home, Miller recently visited Chickies Rock Moose Lodge 307 in Columbia, where he recognized members for their dedication to the community. During his remarks, he praised the organization for reinvesting funds raised through its activities directly back into Columbia.
The lodge regularly supports Columbia High School athletics, local parks, emergency services, community organizations, and charitable causes throughout the borough.
“Lodge 307 takes a big part of the money they raise and gives it right back to the community,” Miller noted during the gathering.
The event also featured recognition of local volunteers whose commitment to service often goes unnoticed but continues to strengthen the fabric of the community.
As Columbia and surrounding communities move through another busy summer, Miller’s message centered on supporting local organizations, keeping residents informed about available resources, and encouraging community involvement.
From promoting neighborhood engagement and public safety initiatives to helping residents access state services and recognizing local volunteers, Miller continues to focus on efforts that aim to make a positive impact throughout the 41st District.
