Saige Zink, 20, of Columbia Borough, Lancaster County, died following a two-vehicle crash that sent both vehicles into the Susquehanna River in Washington Boro/Manor Township during the early morning hours of July 30, 2026. The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified Zink as the victim on July 31.
According to Manor Township Police, the crash occurred at approximately 2:25 a.m. near the intersection of Charlestown Road and Water Street, an area that ends at the river near railroad tracks. Responding officers discovered a white BMW SUV and a blue Chrysler sedan submerged in approximately five feet of water.
Investigation Findings
Police Chief Colin Cleary stated investigators believe the vehicles were traveling westbound on Charlestown Road at a high rate of speed before the crash occurred. Authorities indicated both vehicles failed to stop before entering the river.
CBS21/WHP reported that when asked whether the vehicles may have been racing, Chief Cleary said that was a likely possibility, although investigators stressed it was still early in the investigation and no final conclusions had been reached.
One vehicle ended up in the river while another was reported near the railroad tracks after being recovered. Both vehicles were eventually removed from the water as part of the investigation.
Cause of Death
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office reported that Saige Zink was recovered from one of the submerged vehicles and transported to the Lancaster County Forensic Center. An autopsy determined her cause of death was freshwater drowning, and her death was officially ruled an accident.
Search for Witnesses
WGAL reported that investigators were seeking to identify and speak with three individuals who appeared on surveillance footage near the area around the time of the crash. Police stated the individuals may possess information important to understanding exactly what occurred before the vehicles entered the river.
Chief Cleary told WGAL:
“We believe that there are at least three people who know what happened, and we would very much like to speak with them.”
Family Tragedy
Public obituary records indicate that Saige’s father, Jason “Mike” Zink, passed away unexpectedly on October 6, 2024, less than two years before Saige’s death. His obituary identified Saige and her sibling Keegin as his children.
Jason Zink was 41 years old and a lifelong Columbia resident. His obituary described him as a devoted husband and father.
Additionally, Jason’s father and Saige’s grandfather, Samuel “Sam” Zink Sr., died in August 2023. His obituary listed Saige among his grandchildren.
Community Impact
The incident has drawn significant attention throughout Columbia and Lancaster County because of the victim’s young age and the unusual nature of the crash. Neighbors interviewed by WGAL expressed shock that two vehicles could travel at such speeds on a roadway that leads directly to the river.
At the time of the reports, police indicated the crash remained under active investigation.
