COLUMBIA, PA — As Columbia Borough Council considers the future of the McGinness Innovation Park property, borough officials say their priorities remain attracting investment, strengthening the tax base, and supporting opportunities that benefit residents.
In responses provided to The Columbia Chronicle, borough officials outlined development goals for the property while also addressing ongoing staffing challenges facing local government.
Tax Revenue Remains a Key Goal
When asked what types of businesses council hopes to attract to McGinness Innovation Park, borough officials emphasized the importance of finding the right community partner.
“Any business that brings tax relief, job opportunities, and would be a good partner with the community,” the Borough stated.
While new employment opportunities would be welcomed, officials indicated that expanding the tax base remains the primary objective.
“Tax revenue is most important; however, the creation of any additional job opportunities would be a bonus.”
Should the Borough fail to receive acceptable proposals for the site, officials said there is already an alternative plan.
“To market and sell the property through a realtor.”
The comments suggest council is focused on maximizing the property’s value while ensuring any future development supports the community’s long-term financial health.
Borough Continues to Face Hiring Challenges
Like many municipalities across Pennsylvania, Columbia Borough continues to experience difficulties recruiting employees for key positions.
“It is a very difficult hiring environment, especially for Police Officers and crossing guards,” the Borough stated.
Officials acknowledged that staffing levels are currently below where they would like them to be.
“We currently have openings in the Police Department, Public Works, and Administration.”
According to the Borough, filling those positions would have a direct impact on the services residents receive.
Additional police officers would increase street patrol coverage, while more crossing guards would improve staffing at intersections used by students. Hiring for Public Works would help complete daily operations and larger projects, and additional administrative employees would help support residents and municipal functions.
Strong Development Interest Continues
Despite hiring difficulties, borough officials pointed to continued economic activity and development discussions as a positive sign for Columbia’s future.
“The Columbia Borough real estate market continues to be very active. Staff continues to meet with developers regarding potential projects.”
The statement reflects ongoing interest in both residential and commercial investment within the Borough and highlights continued conversations about future development opportunities.
Financial Position Holds Steady
Officials described Columbia’s financial position as stable, with some signs of improvement compared to a year ago.
“Columbia Borough’s financial position is about the same to slightly stronger than a year ago. The Borough continues to carefully manage expenses while maintaining services and investing in infrastructure and community improvements.”
Officials also cited a strong real estate market and continued developer interest as factors supporting financial stability, while noting that increasing operational and personnel costs remain ongoing challenges.
As Borough Council weighs the future of McGinness Innovation Park and works to fill critical vacancies, officials remain focused on balancing growth, maintaining services, and strengthening Columbia’s financial future.
For residents, the message is clear: while challenges remain, Borough leaders see continued development interest and economic activity as positive signs for the community’s future.
