Columbia Borough Fire Department Opens Its Doors to the Community Tonight

COLUMBIA, PA — Residents will have a unique opportunity to get an up-close look at the people, equipment, and training that help keep Columbia safe when the Columbia Borough Fire Department hosts its annual Open House tonight, Tuesday, October 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the fire station located at 10th and Manor Streets.

The event, organized in partnership with the Columbia Borough Risk Watch Coalition, is designed to be both educational and family-friendly, with a strong focus on fire prevention and public safety. According to promotional materials released by the department, attendees can expect a variety of hands-on demonstrations and activities aimed at helping residents better understand how to prevent fires and respond during emergencies.

Families attending tonight’s event will be able to explore fire apparatus and equipment displays, climb aboard fire trucks, take part in truck rides, and visit the Lancaster County Firemen’s Association Fire Safety Trailer. Children will also have the chance to learn important safety lessons through demonstrations focusing on the classic fire safety message:”Stop, Drop, and Roll.” A bounce house, free food, refreshments, and additional activities are also planned.

Beyond the fun activities, fire officials hope the evening will serve as a reminder of the importance of fire prevention, especially as cooler weather approaches and households begin using heating equipment more frequently. The department’s materials highlight several common causes of residential fires, including improper charging of electronic devices and unsafe use of battery-powered equipment. The educational displays are intended to help residents identify and reduce potential hazards in their homes.

The Open House also offers community members a chance to meet the firefighters who respond to emergencies throughout Columbia Borough and neighboring communities. The department’s mission includes protecting lives and property from fires, rescues, hazardous conditions, and other emergencies through professionally trained personnel and public education efforts

For many children, the event provides a rare opportunity to see firefighting equipment up close in a non-emergency setting. Fire departments across the country often host open houses during Fire Prevention Month as a way to build positive relationships with young residents while teaching life-saving safety lessons. Tonight’s event continues that tradition here in Columbia.

The department has encouraged residents of all ages to attend and learn more about fire safety while enjoying an evening of community engagement.
