COLUMBIA, PA – Columbia officials reported encouraging news regarding police recruitment efforts during Monday night’s council meeting.
Mayor Leo Lutz said the borough recently tested five applicants for open police positions and has already seen strong interest in an upcoming testing cycle scheduled for October.
According to officials, the number of applicants for October testing has grown from just two candidates several weeks ago to eight candidates today.
Police Chief Holly Arndt is expanding recruitment efforts beyond Lancaster County and into the Philadelphia region, where officials say many certified officers and academy graduates are currently seeking employment opportunities.
The borough hopes to hire multiple officers from the current recruitment process, potentially allowing new hires to begin training early next year.
Officials acknowledged that police recruitment remains a challenge across Pennsylvania and the nation but expressed optimism that Columbia is beginning to see positive momentum.
The improved applicant numbers could help address staffing shortages and strengthen public safety services throughout the community.
