COLUMBIA, PA — Nearly every reminder of Columbia’s devastating tornado has left a lasting impression on residents, but one of the most heavily damaged properties appears to be deteriorating further days after the storm.
Following a recent walk through the area, residents observed what appears to be continued structural decline at 23 N. 4th Street, one of the buildings that sustained some of the most severe damage when the tornado struck Columbia. Neighbors living immediately beside the property reported hearing loud noises during the night and believe sections of the damaged structure may have given way.
Comparing photographs taken shortly after the disaster with more recent images, the changes are becoming increasingly noticeable. Portions of the structure that appeared damaged but intact after the tornado now appear to have shifted, collapsed further, or fallen away entirely.
“It’s concerning to see,” said one nearby resident. “We’ve heard parts of the building letting go overnight, and it definitely looks different than it did right after the storm.”
The condition of the neighboring historic firehouse has also raised concerns among observers. Residents who have been monitoring the area believe additional brickwork may have loosened or fallen since the initial tornado damage occurred.
While damaged buildings can continue to settle and deteriorate following a major storm event, especially when subjected to weather exposure and structural stress, the visible changes have left many neighbors worried about safety and the long-term future of the affected properties.
The Fourth Street corridor was among the hardest-hit areas during the tornado, with several buildings suffering extensive structural damage. Since then, property owners, contractors, local officials, and emergency personnel have worked to assess damage and determine the best path forward for repairs, stabilization, or potential demolition where necessary.
Residents living nearby say they remain hopeful that action can be taken before additional sections of the damaged structures fail.
“The safety of the surrounding homes and families is what matters most,” one neighbor said. “Everyone understands these situations take time, but seeing more pieces come loose is unsettling.”

The Columbia Chronicle will continue monitoring developments at 23 N. 4th Street and the surrounding properties as recovery efforts move forward.
