To the Board and Leadership of the Columbia Borough Athletic Association,
I am writing as a community member who cares deeply about the mission of CBAA and the positive impact the organization has on young people in Columbia.
First, I want to acknowledge and appreciate the countless volunteers, coaches, parents, and supporters who dedicate their time and energy to providing opportunities for local children. Youth sports and recreational activities play an important role in our community, and many families, including my own, value the work CBAA does.
However, I would like to respectfully express concerns regarding the recent fundraiser held on behalf of the organization.
While I understand that fundraising is essential and that organizations often seek creative ways to raise money, many members of the community hold differing views about the types of events that should be associated with youth organizations. As a parent and supporter of youth programs, I believe it is reasonable to ask whether every fundraising event aligns with the values and expectations of the families CBAA serves.
My concern is not about individuals as people. Rather, it is about whether events that are likely to be viewed as controversial by a significant portion of the community are the best representation of an organization whose primary purpose is serving local children.
I believe community organizations should be mindful not only of how much money is raised, but also of how that money is raised. Public trust is one of the most valuable assets any nonprofit organization has, and maintaining that trust often requires careful consideration of fundraising partnerships and events.
Because CBAA relies on the support of families from many different backgrounds and beliefs, I hope the organization will consider creating clear guidelines regarding fundraising activities and community partnerships so residents can better understand how such decisions are made.
I offer these thoughts respectfully and in the spirit of constructive dialogue. We all share the same goal: ensuring that CBAA remains a strong, trusted organization that continues to benefit the young people of Columbia for generations to come.
