Over the past two weeks, Columbia police officers responded not only to a stabbing, a sexual assault, and two complex homicide investigations, but also continued handling hundreds of everyday calls for service throughout the borough. During that period, the department answered approximately 494 calls while continuing to provide the high level of service residents expect.

Rather than focusing on the successful arrests, Chief Arndt chose to highlight the officers, detectives, and support staff who worked behind the scenes.

She spoke about the sacrifices made by department members who spent long days and late nights away from their families while following leads, supporting victims, assisting investigators, and ensuring that no call for help went unanswered. Her message reflected both pride and gratitude for the men and women who wear the Columbia Borough Police Department badge.

“What makes me most proud isn’t just that these cases ended with arrests,” Chief Arndt explained. “It’s that while these major investigations were happening, our officers never stopped serving Columbia Borough.” Throughout the investigations, officers continued responding to emergencies, assisting residents, and supporting families in need.

Strong Financial Report for the Borough

Representatives from the borough’s auditing firm presented the results of Columbia’s 2025 audit and reported that the borough received an unmodified opinion, commonly known as a clean audit. Auditors explained that this is the best result a municipality can achieve and praised borough staff for their cooperation throughout the audit process.

Auditors further reported that there were no significant disagreements, no uncorrected misstatements, and no major issues encountered during the review, providing positive reassurance regarding the borough’s financial management.

Support for Fire Department and Community Safety

Council approved an initial $111,000 contribution to the Columbia Fire Department and discussed additional community safety initiatives, including educational efforts concerning e-bikes and scooters. Borough officials emphasized that their goal is to improve safety through awareness, education, and collaboration with residents.

Leaders also announced that Columbia’s postponed Fourth of July fireworks celebration has been rescheduled for September 26, creating another opportunity for families and neighbors to come together and celebrate community spirit.
