Tuesday night’s Columbia Borough Council meeting had a little bit of everything:
Concerned residents.
Tough questions.
A few awkward pauses.
And at least one moment where you could practically hear everyone thinking:
“…did that actually just get asked?”
The Crowd Shows Up (Again)
If anyone thought the recent attention around the airport was going to die down… they were wrong.
Residents showed up once again, proving that Columbia has officially entered its “people are paying attention now” era.
And not just showing up but showing up prepared.
The Airport Conversation Isn’t Going Anywhere
The airport property was back on the table, and so were the same underlying questions:
- What’s going there?
- Who decides what’s allowed?
- And how did we get here in the first place?
You could feel it in the room this isn’t just about a piece of land anymore.
It’s about the direction of the town.
Then Came the Big Three Questions
At one point during public comment, things got… focused.
In the span of a few minutes, three topics hit the room like a triple combo:
Scooters
A completely reasonable question about confiscation policies—which somehow managed to remind everyone that yes, Columbia is dealing with scooters… and no, nobody seems totally satisfied with how that’s going.
Taxes
Then came the financial question.
The kind that makes a room get just a little quieter.
The kind that gets people leaning forward.
The kind that basically translates to:
“So… how expensive is all of this about to get?”
No dramatic announcements but definitely a moment people noticed.
🏗️ Zoning & Data Centers
And then… the one everyone’s been whispering about.
Zoning.
Data centers.
The future of Columbia.
The question wasn’t complicated:
Are we going to allow something like that here or not?
And just like that, the conversation went from “project details” to
“What kind of town do we actually want to be?”
Council Responses: A Mix of Answers… and “We’ll Get Back to That”
To be fair, council engaged.
But like most meetings, there were:
- Some direct answers
- Some careful answers
- And a few moments that felt a lot like
“that’s going to need a follow-up…”
The Real Story: People Are Engaged Now
If there was one takeaway from the night, it wasn’t any single answer.
It was this:
People in Columbia are locked in now.
They’re not just:
- Listening
- Sitting quietly
They’re:
- Asking questions
- Connecting dots
- Showing up consistently
Honorable Mentions
- At least one moment where half the room was trying to figure out if a question had actually been answered
- The quiet tension anytime “taxes” came up
- And the growing realization that zoning might be the real battleground moving forward
Final Scorecard
| Topic | Status |
|---|---|
| Airport plans | Still confusing |
| Zoning clarity | Still in progress |
| Taxes | 👀 |
| Scooters | Still chaotic |
| Public engagement | STRONG |
Final Thought
Last night wasn’t just “another meeting.”
It was another step in something bigger:
👉 A community starting to really question decisions
👉 A council being pushed to explain them
👉 And a town figuring out what it wants to become
Next Meeting Prediction
Bring extra chairs.

So here’s the real issue with scooters and e-bikes…they don’t stop when the red and blues come on. And there is no department in this county, or in this state for that matter (except maybe PSP) that would permit a pursuit for a scooter or an e-bike (unless the rider just committed a forcible felony and his/her identity was unknown…or deadly force was authorized)…which 99.999% of the time is not the case. It’s some punk @$$ kid who thinks he’s in a real life GTA game and has no regard for that dump truck he’s about to get waffled by as he’s running from the cops. It’s a lose/lose situation. Riders aren’t safe on them and it’s not safe to pursue them.
And yes, PA Title 75 3722 permits the impounding of the “vehicle”, an actually forfeiture of the “vehicle” cannot occur unless the person is convicted of the violation (aka, when the judge goes “ah it’s just a kid” and tosses the ticket, the “kid” gets his bike/scooter/dirt bike back. )
